An Interview with Camila Capponi, HR Manager at NTT DATA.

Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Camila Capponi, HR Manager at NTT DATA, to discuss how Bridge’s language training programs have benefitted the company, a global leader in technology. With over 50,000 professionals working across 57 countries, NTT is no stranger to the challenges of maintaining seamless communication across borders.

“Our interaction with the United States, Canada, Europe, and countries in Asia is constant,” Capponi shared, explaining the communication hurdles that come with such a vast global presence. “We have clients who request that we do business in other parts of the world.”

Capponi went on to describe how NTT’s diverse client base led them to focus on training their teams in both English and Portuguese, ensuring they could meet the demands of international clients. This was one of the company’s most pressing challenges: equipping their professionals with the language skills necessary for fast-paced, cross-border operations. Recognizing this need, NTT turned to Bridge’s corporate language training programs – a partnership that has now spanned several years.

Addressing Communication Gaps

During our conversation, Capponi reflected on the impact of multilingual skills, which have proven essential not only for fostering internal collaboration but also for upholding NTT’s high standards of client service. “We have a contract with the European Southern Observatory in Calama [Chile], and they informed us they have people from 47 different nationalities,” she noted. “They required engineers who were 100% bilingual.”

Regular progress reports help track language skills and keep employees motivated.

Capponi went on to explain that this wasn’t an isolated case. NTT’s professionals were often expected to work on significant projects that required fluency in more than one language. “Sometimes, we were unable to conduct business because we didn’t have language proficiency,” she admitted. “That’s why we began and have continued taking Bridge’s courses.”

This clear need for effective communication across languages led NTT to prioritize language training as a crucial part of their company’s growth strategy.

Tailoring Training to Business Needs

When asked about the specific goals NTT aimed to achieve with Bridge’s language training programs, Capponi emphasized how important language proficiency was to create more business opportunities. As she shared, the objectives were “to advance, to progress, and to be able to do more business,” pointing to partnerships like the one with BHP, which requires team members to be bilingual in spoken communication.

“Advance, grow, and generate more business” – Camila Capponi, HR Manager at NTT Data Chile.

One of the standout aspects of Bridge’s approach, according to Capponi, has been its flexibility in tailoring training programs to NTT’s specific operational needs. “The emphasis has always been on verbal communication,” she shared. “We want our teams to attend meetings with BHP Australia and understand everything. The main goal is for them to speak and understand.”

Throughout the interview, it became clear that Bridge’s approach wasn’t just about addressing immediate needs. Capponi pointed out that the partnership aligned perfectly with NTT’s long-term vision. “We didn’t want to be searching for these skills later on. We wanted to have them already developed in-house,” she said, highlighting the company’s proactive mindset.

Tangible Results and Continuous Progress

As the conversation continued, Capponi discussed the measurable progress NTT has seen from the language training programs. “The positive feedback is unmistakable,” she noted. “Leaders frequently comment on the improvements, and team members are now able to participate in more meetings.”

She also highlighted how NTT relies on the detailed reports provided by Bridge to track the progress of their participants and monitor the ongoing development of their language skills. This data-driven approach helps NTT measure success and ensure continuous improvement across their teams.

Looking to the Future

At the interview’s conclusion, Capponi reflected on the future of NTT’s relationship with Bridge. “We’ve seen consistent progress and are very happy with Bridge,” she said. “Every time we request improvements, they’re implemented.”

It’s clear that ongoing language training remains an integral part of NTT’s growth strategy. By focusing on continuous upskilling, NTT ensures that its talent force remains prepared to meet the demands of an ever-evolving global market. Bridge’s tailored solutions continue to support NTT in achieving its long-term vision – building a future where their professionals are equipped to succeed in any environment.

The post Measuring the ROI of Corporate Language Training Programs:  A Comprehensive Guide  appeared first on Bridge Languages.

]]>
In today’s globalized business landscape, investing in employee language training has become increasingly important for companies looking to stay competitive and drive growth. However, justifying the investment in language training programs often requires demonstrating a clear return on investment (ROI). We explore the key metrics, strategies, and best practices for measuring the ROI of corporate language training initiatives.

Understanding Language Training ROI

Language training ROI refers to the financial return a company can expect from investing in improving its employees’ language skills. It is calculated by comparing the monetary benefits gained from the training program against the costs incurred. Measuring ROI is crucial for businesses as it helps justify investments, identify areas for improvement, optimize resource allocation, enhance employee performance, and maintain a competitive edge in the global market.

Key Metrics for Measuring Language Training ROI

To effectively measure the ROI of language training programs, companies should track several key metrics:

  • Pre- and post-training assessments: Gauge knowledge and skill improvement by comparing employee performance before and after training.
  • Employee feedback: Collect feedback on the quality and relevance of the training to assess its effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.
  • Skills application: Monitor how employees apply learned language skills in their daily tasks to determine the practical impact of the training.
  • Cost-benefit analysis: Compare the total cost of training (materials, instructor fees, employee time) against the realized benefits to evaluate the program’s financial efficiency.
  • Time-to-competency: Measure the time it takes for employees to achieve desired language proficiency levels after completing the training.
  • Employee retention: Track the impact of language training on employee retention rates, as improved skills can lead to higher job satisfaction and loyalty.
  • Business metrics: Analyze the correlation between language training outcomes and key business metrics, such as increased sales, improved customer satisfaction, or expanded global reach.

Calculating Language Training ROI

The basic formula for calculating language training ROI is:

ROI (%) = (Monetary Benefits – Training Costs) / Training Costs x 100 An ROI above 100% indicates that the benefits outweigh the costs, while an ROI below 100% suggests that the training program needs improvement to justify the investment.

Strategies for Optimizing Language Training ROI

To maximize the ROI of language training programs, companies can implement the following strategies:

  • Customize training content: Tailor the training material to the specific needs of the company and its employees to maximize relevance and effectiveness. At Bridge we offer hyper-personalized content to meet even the most specific use cases.

  • Regularly update training materials: Keep the content up-to-date with the latest EdTech and best practices to maintain its value and relevance.
  • Continuously evaluate and adapt: Regularly assess the impact of the training program and make necessary adjustments based on feedback and results. At Bridge our HR Platform provides key metrics and analytics that allows training managers to track learning and engagement in our language training programs.
  • Provide ongoing support: Offer resources and support beyond the initial training to reinforce learning and ensure long-term skill retention.

Additionally, with a Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 65%, it is clear that employees not only greatly valued the training but would also be willing to recommend it to others, highlighting a positive ROI in terms of loyalty and satisfaction.

Extensive coverage and program reach: Over 600 employees were trained, emphasizing the positive impact of this investment by significantly improving the language skills of a large portion of the teams. This improvement translates into smoother communication and greater operational efficiency throughout the organization.

Direct impact on productivity: The advancement in language skills enabled employees to communicate more effectively with international partners and clients. This not only facilitates the management of global projects but also opens new business opportunities, showcasing a return on investment that drives the company’s long-term growth and competitiveness.

Improvement in the learning experience: Positive feedback from participants, who highlighted the quality of the materials and the dedication of the Global Teachers, underscores that the investment in training not only enhanced language skills but also provided a highly valued learning experience for professionals. A new whitepaper titled “LangTech in the AI Era,” by experts Alex Asher and Brian Kantt, provides insightful industry analysis on the impact of AI, especially post-ChatGPT, on technology-enabled language learning.

Compiling findings from interviews with leaders across dozens of language learning companies, the paper examines crucial questions surrounding AI’s transformative potential as an instructional tool.

A moment of personalized teaching through video conferencing

Here are some of the key takeaways:

  • Companies’ adoption of AI tutors is growing, with dozens of language apps releasing AI tutors in 2023. However, there is little evidence that learners are abandoning human teachers for AI.
  • Teachers mainly use ChatGPT to save time creating materials, but few schools are radically personalizing curricula with AI yet.
  • Machine translation is advanced, but demand for language learning still grows. Human connection matters for motivation and progression.
  • Fundraising has surged for language companies using AI, but the costs of personalization at scale are still prohibitive.
  • The novelty of AI conversations wears off for some learners over time, and AI chatbots currently lack critical capabilities like a human’s accountability.

Also referenced by Asher and Kantt is how AI technology is already making inroads with major established language learning companies and startups alike, in the form of conversational practice, pronunciation evaluation tools, adaptive assignment creation, and other innovative applications that personalize the learning experience and enhance engagement through real-time feedback and interactive content.

Examples of this technology include:

  1. Speak – This app provides instant feedback to learners on their speaking using AI. Speak has raised $16 million, led by OpenAI, to fuel the expansion of its AI tutor.
  1. ELSA – This English language learning platform has raised $23 million to use AI to help learners improve their pronunciation.
  1. Preply – Preply has raised $70 million “to scale the experience” of its AI offerings. It aims to leverage AI to enhance its live tutor classes.
  1. Memrise – Memrise has launched an AI language tutor called Membot.
  1. Duolingo – Duolingo has created the virtual assistant Duolingo Max.
  1. EnglishCentral – This company introduced an AI language tutor called MiMi, built on ChatGPT, for English learners.

At Bridge, our “Teacher-Powered” approach underscores our belief in the irreplaceable value of human accountability and connection, a sentiment echoed in the recent findings highlighting the limitations of AI chatbots in these areas.

Nevertheless, we recognize the potential of AI in enhancing educational experiences and are excited to announce the upcoming launch of our AI-assisted products, LinguaLevel and Conversation CoPilot, in the coming weeks.

In today’s interconnected business landscape, language proficiency has evolved from a desirable skill to an indispensable asset. As companies expand their reach across borders, the ability to communicate effectively in multiple languages has become a critical driver of success. Implementing a robust corporate language training program is not only an investment in employees’ personal growth but also a strategic move to enhance an organization’s global competitiveness. In fact, a study revealed that for 30% of working professionals, learning a language ranks among the top three aspirations in life, above fulfilling lifelong dreams and passions and investing in personal growth [1]. In this article, we explore the key elements of implementing a successful corporate language learning initiative.

Aligning Language Learning with Business Objectives

The foundation of a successful corporate language training program lies in aligning it with your company’s overarching goals. Begin by identifying the specific language skills that are most relevant to employees’ roles and responsibilities. For instance, sales teams may require a strong command of industry-specific terminology, while customer support personnel might benefit from training in empathetic communication and problem-solving dialogues. Notably, 53% of respondents in a survey stated that external communication with customers is the main benefit of language training, with 73% using a foreign language frequently in their daily work [1]. By tailoring the curriculum to the unique needs of each department, you ensure that the language learning experience is not only engaging but also directly applicable to each employee’s daily tasks.

Fostering a Culture of Continuous Learning

To truly embed language learning into an organization’s DNA, it is crucial to cultivate a culture that values and encourages continuous growth. This involves creating an environment where employees feel supported and motivated to pursue language acquisition. Companies should implement a blended learning approach that combines self-paced online modules with interactive group sessions and one-on-one coaching. Encouraging the use of target languages in informal settings, such as team-building activities or cultural celebrations, is another tactic. By making language learning an integral part of your company’s ethos, you can inspire employees to embrace the challenge and reap the rewards of multilingualism. Remarkably, 70% of workers who receive language training become more confident in their work [2], highlighting the positive impact of corporate language learning initiatives.

fostering a culture of continuous learning in a company
Fostering a culture of continuous learning is key to embedding language learning into the organization’s DNA

Leveraging Technology for Engaging and Effective Learning

In the digital age, technology has revolutionized the way we learn languages. Today, language programs should harness the power of innovative tools and platforms to make language training accessible, interactive, and enjoyable for employees. Incorporating gamification elements, such as leaderboards and achievement badges, to boost motivation and friendly competition and utilizing virtual reality simulations to immerse learners in realistic scenarios allows learners to practice their language skills in context. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, companies can create a dynamic and immersive learning experience that keeps employees engaged and excited about their language journey.

Measuring Progress and Celebrating Achievements

To ensure the effectiveness of a corporate language training program, it is essential to establish clear metrics for measuring progress and success. Set well-defined goals, such as achieving a specific proficiency level or delivering a presentation in the target language, for each employee. Regularly assess employees’ language skills through a combination of standardized tests, real-world assignments, and peer evaluations. Celebrate milestones and achievements through recognition programs, showcasing the impact of language proficiency on individual and team performance. By tracking progress and acknowledging accomplishments, you can reinforce the value of language learning and inspire employees to continue striving for excellence.

Fostering a Global Mindset through Cultural Awareness

Language proficiency is only one facet of effective cross-cultural communication. To truly unlock the potential of your multilingual workforce, it is crucial to cultivate cultural awareness and sensitivity. Incorporate cultural training modules into your language program, exploring the nuances of business etiquette, social norms, and communication styles in different regions. Encourage employees to participate in cultural exchange initiatives, such as international assignments or virtual collaborations with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. By fostering a global mindset, you equip your employees with the skills and understanding necessary to navigate complex international business environments with confidence and finesse.

Implementing a successful corporate language training program requires a strategic and holistic approach. By aligning language learning with business objectives, fostering a culture of continuous growth, leveraging technology for engagement, measuring progress, and cultivating cultural awareness, companies can create a framework for linguistic and professional excellence. Notably, 65% of respondents in a survey would ask their employer for professional development opportunities and language learning as a non-monetary benefit, and 94% expect support or recognition from their employer towards the development of foreign language skills [1]. As your employees develop their language skills and cultural competence, they become powerful assets in driving your organization’s global success.

At Bridge Education Group, we understand the transformative power of language learning in the corporate world. Our comprehensive language training solutions are designed to empower a company’s workforce and unleash an organization’s global potential. Natalia Bustos, Senior Account Executive at Bridge Education Group, highlighted the importance of English in the modern workplace during her recent presentation at HR Learning Day in Lima, Peru. We delved deeper into the ideas she presented at the conference.

Natalia, what are the main benefits you’ve observed for companies that invest in English training for their employees?

Natalia Bustos: Companies that invest in English training see notable advances in communication and collaboration among their teams, which directly drives an increase in productivity and efficiency.

This investment in language skills not only improves customer satisfaction and loyalty by empowering employees to better understand and respond to customer needs but also expands the company’s opportunities in the global market, making them more internationally competitive.

Furthermore, prioritizing language education places organizations in a privileged position to attract and retain top talent, as professionals actively seek opportunities for personal and professional development.

How does proficiency in English as a lingua franca affect efficiency in the workplace?

NB: Proficiency in English is crucial for optimizing operational efficiency within global organizations. This skill enables not only clear and direct communication but also facilitates efficient coordination among multicultural teams, preventing misunderstandings that could delay necessary decisions and actions. Moreover, talents with a high level of English tend to exhibit greater confidence and satisfaction in their roles, which is reflected in their ability to interact effectively and add value to their teams.

Mastery of English not only opens doors to better career opportunities and income potential due to the ability to take on international roles and more challenging projects, but it also enriches intercultural competencies. This is especially valuable in a globalized world, as it enhances understanding and relationships with colleagues and clients from different cultures, thus strengthening team cohesion and professional networks.

In your presentation, you mentioned the English skills gap in the workplace. Could you elaborate on how this gap impacts companies and employees?

NB: The English skills gap presents a significant challenge for companies aspiring to establish themselves and thrive in the global market. This deficiency in crucial skills leads to less effective communication, which can result in significant and costly errors. Additionally, linguistic limitations hinder expansion into new markets and affect the ability to collaborate effectively in international environments.

Internally, individuals are fully aware of the importance of English in their careers; a large percentage recognize that English training is essential for their professional success. However, there is a notable discrepancy between this perceived need and the training opportunities provided by companies: Only a minority of employees report that their workplace offers adequate English training programs. This not only demonstrates a missed opportunity for companies to invest in developing their teams but also underscores the urgent need to close this gap to enhance both the individual growth of employees and the collective success of the corporation.

Investing in English programs is not just about improving individual communication but an essential strategy to strengthen the global competencies of the entire organization, thus ensuring its viability and competitiveness in the long term.

A recent study conducted by Pearson and PSB Insights underscores the direct link between English proficiency and professional success. According to the data, 80% of respondents associate advanced English skills with higher income potential, while 56% indicate that effective communication in English can lead to a salary increase of up to 50%.

What strategies would you recommend to companies for implementing effective English training programs?

NB: Given the varied and complex challenges in language training, it is essential to conduct a thorough analysis of the specific needs of different functions and departments. This approach allows us to design programs that are not only relevant but also highly effective in terms of outcomes and return on investment.

Moreover, considering that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for organizations, it is very important to tailor training to the organizational culture and the specifics of each company. For example, learning solutions must be flexible enough to accommodate various learning styles and preferences, as well as varied schedules. A blended learning approach, combining self-study with live sessions led by a Global Teacher, can provide a more complete and enriching learning experience. By offering diverse options, we ensure that language training programs are not only accessible but also appealing and effective for all employees.

Could you share an example of a success case where English training has transformed an organization?

NB: Certainly, a notable case is that of the Komatsu Cummins Group in Chile. This company faced the challenge of linguistically training their teams to meet the demands of an international operation. The Human Resources team had the crucial goal of ensuring that all employees could communicate effectively in English, which was essential for the daily operation and sustained growth of the company.

In response to this need, Bridge developed a fully customized language training program for the Komatsu Cummins Group. This program not only met their specific needs but also achieved very high customer satisfaction, with a CSAT index of 97% and a Net Promoter Score of 65%. More than 600 employees were trained under this program, significantly improving their linguistic skills. As a result, notable improvements were observed in internal communication and with international clients, facilitating significant market expansion. This success clearly reflects how strategic investment in English training can transform an organization.

What role does technology play in language learning in today’s business environment?

NB: Technology is fundamental in language learning within the business context, as it offers innovative solutions that transform and enrich the educational experience.

Language learning platforms powered by artificial intelligence play a crucial role by providing personalized teaching, adapting to the level and learning style of each user. The integration of gamification and interactive content can significantly increase engagement and motivation, making learning not only more effective but also more enjoyable.

Moreover, data analytics tools are indispensable as they allow companies to monitor the progress of employees, identify areas that need improvement, and adjust training programs to maximize their impact. Measuring this impact is essential; therefore, establishing clear goals and key performance indicators, such as improvements in communication skills, increased productivity, or global market expansion, is vital. Periodic assessments help closely monitor the progress of employees and facilitate the collection of feedback, which is crucial for assessing the effectiveness of the program and making data-based adjustments.

This comprehensive, technology-based approach not only improves the individual learning experience but also benefits the organization as a whole, driving global and sustained growth.

What impact did your presentation have on the audience? What were the most prominent questions raised?

NB: It facilitated the reflection on the role that English plays in organizations today in keeping them competitive and enabling them to access new markets. On the other hand, there is the impact it has on the professional development of individuals, improvement of their competencies, retention of talent, and communication among colleagues, clients, and suppliers.

There is a general consensus that English is a skill that must be part of all company training and benefits plans.

After the presentation, several professionals approached our booth to discuss their company-specific challenges, such as lack of motivation or progress. Using our extensive experience, the innovative solutions available at Bridge, and our team of supportive professionals, we were able to determine how they could best approach their unique challenges to achieve their language training goals.

English is not just another language in the professional world, but an essential tool for growth and business efficiency. As the world becomes more interconnected, mastery of English is an indispensable investment for any company aspiring to achieve global success.

The landscape of workplace learning is rapidly evolving, and corporate language training is no exception. As organizations recognize the importance of language skills in today’s globalized business environment, they are seeking innovative and effective solutions to upskill their workforce. In this article, we’ll explore the key trends shaping the future of corporate language training.

1.Personalized Learning Paths

One of the most significant trends in corporate language training is the shift towards personalized learning paths. By tailoring language learning experiences to individual employee needs and preferences, organizations can enhance engagement and improve learning outcomes. As Bridge Education Group’s Academic Director, Karina Zew, explains, “Personalized learning allows us to meet employees where they are in their language learning journey and provide targeted support to help them reach their goals.  Our Hyper-Personalized Specialized Courses take the learner’s unique professional context, company-specific materials, and industry jargon to create lesson plans that directly apply to each employee’s work environment.” Carmen Parra, Bridge’s Key Account Manager, adds, “Our Hyper-Personalized Courses ensure that the language skills learners acquire are immediately relevant and applicable to their professional lives.”

    2. Technology Integration

The integration of technology is transforming corporate language training. Digital platforms, mobile learning apps, and online language courses offer employees the flexibility to learn at their own pace and convenience. “We are seeing a growing demand for technology-enabled language training solutions,” says Natalia Bustos, Senior Account Manager at Bridge. “Our clients recognize the potential of these tools to enhance learner engagement and accelerate language acquisition.”

Bridge’s learning platform is at the forefront of this technological integration. The platform offers a personalized dashboard, detailed course syllabus, and live progress tracking to help learners navigate their language learning journey.
Learners can also connect with their teachers through online profiles and receive consistent feedback to accelerate their progress.

The platform also provides interactive course materials and videos, ensuring an engaging learning experience. Learners can also earn blockchain-protected digital badges to showcase their achievements.

    Bridge Platform

    3. Gamification and Microlearning

Gamification elements, such as leaderboards, badges, and rewards, are being incorporated into corporate language training programs to make learning more engaging and enjoyable. Microlearning, which involves delivering bite-sized language lessons, allows employees to learn on the go and fit language studies into their busy schedules. “Gamification and microlearning are powerful strategies for keeping learners motivated and focused,” notes Zew. “By breaking down language learning into manageable chunks and adding elements of fun and competition, we can create a more effective and enjoyable learning experience.”

Bridge has embraced gamification through the introduction of Digital Badges. These blockchain-backed credentials showcase learners’ language proficiency achievements in a modern, secure, and verifiable way. Learners earn a digital badge for every 45-hour module they complete, with each module aligned to internationally recognized proficiency standards such as the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) and the GSE (Global Scale of English). The badges reflect learners’ progress and can be easily shared on social media platforms, digital resumes, or anywhere else trainees want to showcase their language skills. “Our Digital Badges are a game-changer in terms of learner motivation and engagement,” says Georgina Mazzarella, Corporate Account Executive at Bridge. “By providing a tangible reward for their efforts and a way to share their achievements with others, we’ve seen a significant increase in learner participation and completion rates.”

    4. Social and Collaborative Learning

Language learning is increasingly being viewed as a social and collaborative process. Corporate language training programs are incorporating more opportunities for learners to interact with each other, practice their language skills in real-life scenarios, and learn from their peers. “Social and collaborative learning activities not only improve language proficiency but also foster teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills,” says Zew. “These are critical skills that translate directly to the workplace.”

Bridge’s Conversation Connection Specialized Course is an excellent example of this trend in action. Designed for B1 and B2 level learners, this program focuses on learning through conversations and group dynamics, connecting learners with other professionals who share their level of English proficiency. Participants engage in a variety of interactive activities, such as dynamic games, management topic debates, discussions of current events, problem-solving exercises, presentations, and cultural exchanges. “Conversation Connection offers a unique opportunity for learners to practice their English skills in a social and business-oriented environment,” explains Umut Erzog, Teacher Experience Manager at Bridge. “By combining language learning with professional networking and cultural exchange, we’ve created a truly immersive and collaborative learning experience that accelerates language acquisition and builds essential workplace skills.”

    Working group

    5. Alignment with Business Goals

Corporate language training programs are increasingly being designed to align with specific business goals and objectives. By identifying the language skills that are most critical for success in different roles and departments, organizations can create targeted training programs that directly support their business strategies. “Aligning language training with business goals is essential for maximizing the return on investment,” notes Carlos Pizarro, LATAM Regional Director at Bridge. “When employees acquire the language skills that are directly relevant to their work, they are better equipped to communicate effectively, collaborate with global teams, and drive business results.”

Bridge takes a proactive approach to aligning language training with business goals through a Language Needs Assessment. This comprehensive evaluation process involves close collaboration with corporate clients to explore the need for language training among different departments and job functions, identifying specific skill gaps and areas for improvement. By gathering this information, Bridge is able to design a customized training program that meets the client’s specific needs and objectives. “Our Language Needs Assessment is a critical first step in creating a truly effective corporate language training program,” says Bustos. “By taking the time to understand each client’s unique business goals and language requirements, we can develop a tailored curriculum that maximizes the impact of the training and delivers measurable results.”

As the corporate language training landscape continues to evolve, language training providers must stay at the forefront of these trends. By leveraging personalized learning paths, technology integration, gamification, microlearning, social learning, and alignment with business goals, these providers can deliver cutting-edge language training solutions that meet the needs of today’s global workforce.

At Bridge Education Group, teamwork is one of our core pillars. We know that building and maintaining effective teams can be challenging, but we embrace this ongoing journey with enthusiasm. Recently, a group of Bridge managers from our Buenos Aires and Santiago offices came together to participate in an innovative Enneagram workshop delivered by the consulting firm Awareness to Action.

The Enneagram is a model of human personality that describes nine distinct types or styles, each with its own motivations, strengths, and areas for growth. During the workshop, our team learned about the two key principles of the model: Instinctual Leadership, which refers to where each person instinctively focuses their attention, and the Nine Adaptive Strategies, which are the ways each personality style solves problems and adapts to the environment.

But beyond individual self-awareness, the true power of the Enneagram is revealed when applied to teamwork. Understanding different personality styles can greatly enhance communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution. For example, a “Challenger” leader (type 8) can learn to adapt their direct communication style to work better with an “Individualist” colleague (type 4) who values sensitivity. Or, a team can intentionally seek out the perspective of a “Loyalist” member (type 6) to anticipate problems and plan solutions.

Participants appreciated the experience and the insights they gained.

“The workshop gave me a new perspective, not just with regards to myself, but in terms of how I can work better with my colleagues,”

said Ayelén Garaventta, Director of Product Delivery and UX at Bridge.

Carolina Guerrero, Bridge’s Finance and Administration Manager, added, “This knowledge will help me to be a better leader and to adapt my approach to the needs of each member of my team.”

At Bridge, we firmly believe in continuous investment in the development of our people and our teams. Transformative experiences like the Enneagram workshop are key to continuing to grow and strengthen the teams that work every day to bring quality education to students worldwide.

The team members are dialoguing and working together for the Enneagram workshop.

Non-native teacher Siavash Eskandarioun combines his experiences in learning English with an engaging, supportive environment. In addition to four years of experience teaching general and Business English online and in person, Siavash has also been teaching students in BridgeEnglish’s corporate language training program for five months. Using his two MBAs, a CELTA certificate, and additional specialized training, Siavash has developed teaching methods that include personalized, inquiry-based instruction that accommodates different learners and encourages autonomy. Let’s get to know Siavash.

How long have you been teaching English?

I’ve been teaching general and business English online and in person for the past four years, and I’m proud to say that I’ve been working with Bridge for the past five months. I’m looking for a chance to use my teaching experience and linguistic abilities to mentor and motivate students as they learn the English language.

Curious about the time commitment involved in learning a language? Read From Novice to Native: How Long Does it Take to Learn a Language?

    What languages do you speak?

My native languages are Azeri and Persian and additionally, I have an intermediate level of proficiency in French, which enhances my understanding of language acquisition and facilitates communication with multilingual students.

How do you incorporate your culture and background into your language lessons?

Incorporating my culture and background into language lessons is a valuable aspect of my teaching approach. Coming from Iranian culture, I integrate authentic cultural materials, such as literature, music, art, and films from Iran, into the curriculum. This allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the language while also immersing themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Iran.

I also share personal anecdotes, traditions, and customs, offering a firsthand perspective and fostering a sense of connection and appreciation for the Iranian culture. By embracing cultural diversity, I strive to create a more comprehensive and engaging language learning experience for my students.

Learn about reasons English language programs and company culture should align.

What is your approach to helping students learn a new language?

My teaching style revolves around creating an engaging and supportive environment that fosters active involvement, meaningful interactions, and real-world language use. I modify my methods to accommodate different learning types, encouraging inquiry and a positive attitude, and delivering constructive feedback. Finally, I want to help students become autonomous learners and strong communicators in the target language.

What are some of your favorite teaching tools or techniques to engage students?

One of my favorite tools is screen sharing, which allows me to present interactive materials, showcase examples, and provide real-time demonstrations tailored to the student’s individual needs. I also make use of virtual whiteboards or collaborative document editors, enabling us to work together on exercises, brainstorm ideas, and visually illustrate concepts.

Personalized feedback and targeted questioning help stimulate critical thinking and active participation. Moreover, I encourage open dialogue and create a supportive environment that fosters meaningful discussions and personalized learning experiences.

Tailoring instruction to student contexts and needs is important. Learn more about effective Business English learning methodologies.

How do you adapt your teaching style to meet the needs of different students?

I use a range of techniques to modify my teaching approach to accommodate the demands of various students. I start by evaluating each student’s learning preferences, advantages, and areas for development. Then, I adjust my lesson plans and activities to reflect each student’s interests and skill level. I also offer additional encouragement or challenges in accordance with their development, and I promote open dialogue to address any worries or learning challenges they might have.

What is your professional and educational background?

I am a CELTA holder from Cambridge University, which is a certificate in teaching English to speakers of other languages. I also have two MBAs in the fields of strategy and marketing.

The CELTA course truly broadened my teaching and linguistic perspectives, pushing me to explore new areas. Although I had limited prior teaching experience while taking part in CELTA, the training heightened my passion for teaching English, especially to international students, regardless of their first languages. This experience served as a powerful motivator for me to continue developing as an English language educator.

Bridge offers numerous professional development courses which are free for Bridge teachers. These courses are for those who want to get acquainted with the concept of modern English teaching approaches. I also completed Bridge’s Teaching Business English course, which I found quite beneficial.

These aspects make Bridge an exceptional choice for language teaching, and I am proud to be a part of their team.

A dynamic Business English curriculum is at the heart of any effective corporate language training program. The curriculum should ensure comprehensive language development and opportunities for the practical application of skills that will be used in a professional context. While some aspects of the curriculum will vary depending on the context of the learner and the industry, some important components should be part of any effective Business English curriculum.

Bridge’s language program solutions are personalized and flexible, but the core skills required for effective language training remain the same. Language training should be customized to meet the needs of learners at different English proficiency levels, in different industries, and with different job-skill requirements. Effective needs analyses and consultations will identify specific goals and objectives. A dynamic curriculum will incorporate the key components of an effective Business English curriculum while remaining continuously relevant as industries, technologies, and practices evolve over time.

Let’s look at 10 important components of an effective Business English curriculum.

Read about the drivers behind successful curricula development in Debunking the Methodology Myth: Effective Business English Learning Practices.

    1. Business vocabulary

Any industry has business-specific jargon. Business vocabulary enables individuals to effectively communicate in a professional setting. It includes industry-specific terms, jargon, and expressions that are commonly used in business contexts. For example, finance, marketing, and human resources each have different workplace English.

Having a strong business vocabulary allows company employees to express their ideas clearly, understand others, and actively participate in meetings, negotiations, and presentations.

Learn about ways companies can provide support for their English language learners.

Communication encompasses many skills, but speaking and reading are often particularly important focuses for students of Business English.

    2. Business communication skills

Whether communication is internal or external, written or oral, communication skills are an essential part of Business English communication. Effective communication is a key factor in professional success, regardless of the industry or field.

In a business context, communication skills are essential for building strong relationships, establishing credibility, conveying information accurately, resolving conflicts, and achieving organizational goals. Therefore, a Business English curriculum should prioritize the development of communication skills relevant to job and industry-specific needs.

Strong communication skills are also very important for successful leadership and teamwork. Leaders need to communicate their vision, motivate team members, delegate tasks, and provide constructive feedback. Collaboration within company teams relies on clear and open communication channels.

Read about five reasons your English language program and company culture should align.

    3. Business etiquette

In multinational companies, understanding business etiquette in the context of cultural norms and expectations is very important. Business etiquette refers to the social norms, behaviors, and practices expected in professional settings. It encompasses a wide range of skills, including communication, networking, professional appearance, cultural sensitivity, and business ethics. These are key for conducting successful negotiations, making persuasive presentations, and building strong business relationships.

In addition, an English language program curriculum can also cover aspects such as personal branding, professional appearance, and even grooming. Applying these skills contributes to creating a positive impression, projecting a sleek image, and enhancing a company employee’s personal and corporate brand.

Learn about eight compelling reasons to invest in language training for non-native employees.

Business writing is an important element of an effective Business English curriculum, preparing students for tasks that will require written expression of thoughts and ideas.

    4. Business writing

English for business goes beyond teaching employees how to write professional documents such as reports, proposals, and resumes. Business writing often involves persuading others, whether it’s to secure a deal, convince stakeholders, or propose new ideas. Effective writing skills help professionals express their thoughts persuasively, leading to desired outcomes.

English is the lingua franca for international communication. Clear and concise writing ensures that messages are understood by a diverse audience across different cultural backgrounds.

Read about Teacher Experience Manager, Karina Zew, who provides training and support for Bridge’s global team of Business English teachers.

    5. Business listening and comprehension

Communication is not a one-way street, and that means understanding a customer or client’s needs and expectations is also a crucial skill that should be part of an effective Business English curriculum. Effective listening skills allow professionals to gather relevant information, address any concerns, and provide appropriate solutions, leading to better client and customer relations.

A complete Business English curriculum will incorporate active listening skills to also help employees understand instructions, feedback, and suggestions from company team members. This, in turn, fosters cooperation, prevents miscommunication, and promotes a positive working environment.

Learn how Bridge’s ISO 9001 certification ensures language program quality and efficiency.

    6. Business negotiations

English for business should teach employees the vocabulary and strategies for conducting successful negotiations. Including the art of negotiation in a Business English curriculum allows learners to practice and develop the skills required for practical interactions.

However, negotiating can be challenging and requires confidence. So, by providing negotiation opportunities in the curriculum, Business English students can practice and gain confidence in their abilities, preparing them for real-world business scenarios. Negotiations require effective communication, including listening, speaking, and understanding the nuances of language. By incorporating negotiation scenarios into the curriculum, learners can also enhance their overall business communication skills.

Bridge’s language program solutions include monthly English roundtable workshops that combine different Business English learners at the same English proficiency levels to practice skills such as this. It’s particularly helpful for students who may be taking private courses, as they are able to practice conversational skills with others. Led by trainers, students are given role-play tasks or projects to complete, which provides opportunities to build language skills that include reading, writing, speaking, and listening as well as organizational skills such as collaboration, leadership, and problem-solving.

Learn more about how Bridge’s course materials are selected for specific students and company cohorts, with curricula designed around authentic tasks.

Because performing presentations is a common task of employees in many industries, curricula that incorporates the skills needed to master this task and build confidence is essential.

    7. Business presentations

Presenting in front of an audience can be daunting, but with practice, learners can build confidence in their speaking abilities. Including presentations in a Business English curriculum provides learners with opportunities to overcome stage fright, improve public speaking skills, and develop self-confidence.

Delivering a well-structured and engaging presentation is also a hallmark of professionalism in the business world. By incorporating business presentations in the English curriculum, company employees can develop the necessary skills to deliver impactful presentations, creating a positive impression on clients, colleagues, and other stakeholders.

Read about essential eLearning platform features for Business English courses.

    8. Business cultural awareness

As previously mentioned, English is the language of international communication. In today’s globalized business environment, intercultural competence is vital. Business English curricula should incorporate cultural awareness training to help learners understand and navigate cultural differences in communication styles, etiquette, and business practices.

To excel in the global market, professionals must understand cultural influences on consumer behavior, market preferences, and business practices. A dynamic curriculum that incorporates cultural awareness equips Business English students with insights into international markets, enabling them to tailor their products, services, and marketing strategies to specific cultural contexts.

Furthermore, each culture has its own set of taboos, sensitive topics, and behavioral norms. Without cultural awareness, English learners may unknowingly commit a faux pas, leading to embarrassment, and even loss of business. By incorporating cultural awareness into the curriculum, Business English students can come to understand these sensitivities and adapt their behavior accordingly.

Using correct grammar in written communication is an essential skill, as it helps learners convey their ideas accurately and professionally, avoiding misinterpretation or confusion.

    9. Business grammar

Business grammar is important as it’s tied to vocabulary, writing style, presentation skills, and cross-cultural communication. Business grammar ensures that written and spoken messages are clear, concise, and professional. It helps learners convey their ideas accurately and professionally, avoiding misinterpretation or confusion.

In Business English, even minor errors can change the meaning of a sentence, resulting in confusion, potential conflicts, or missed opportunities. By focusing on business grammar, the chances of such miscommunication are minimized.

Read about how native language, instructional methods, learning environment, and other factors influence how long it takes to learn a language.

    10. Business reading

An effective Business English curriculum should encourage employees to read articles and any additional materials to improve their reading comprehension skills. This helps students understand and interpret various types of business texts, such as emails, reports, memos, and financial statements in English. Strong reading skills enable company employees to comprehend complex information, extract key details, and then respond appropriately.

Reading relevant related books, articles, and journals also fosters continuous professional development. It allows students to explore different topics, gain new insights, and expand their knowledge base.

Bridge partners with top publishers and content providers to provide students with relevant topics of study, coupled with authentic resources. The Bridge learning platform provides online learning, class and teacher scheduling, video conferencing, and access to all learning materials, creating a flexible, personalized learning environment.

These ten components guarantee a Business English curriculum that is very complete but also adaptable to student and company needs. A dynamic Business English curriculum should incorporate current trends and developments in the business world to ensure language learners are well-prepared for the demands of the professional environment.
